The nature of the damage seems to be that something punctured through the cardboard packaging, plastic wrap, and ripped through the mattress cover and tore out a chunk of the underlying foam.

The pull/tear in the cover fabric produced a "run" in the cover that extends the entire length of the mattress.

The size of the missing foam chunk is approx. 2.5" X 2.5". In this picture and those that follow, the cover fabric has been pushed into the indentation where the foam chunk is missing to give a better feel for where exactly the foam is missing underneath the cover.

This shot is a closeup looking *through* the actual tear/hole in the cover fabric, so that the missing foam chunk can be seen.
